Rapidly launching a network to support COVID-19 testing

At the beginning of the pandemic, the Department of Public Health for a large state was trying to rapidly expand its COVID-19 testing capacity. The National Guard was setting up the testing locations throughout the state while the Department of Public Health labs were getting ready for the influx of specimens. To connect the testing facilities to the labs and meet testing goals set by the Governor, the team needed to find a logistics partner to design a network and begin transporting specimens in a matter of days.

On a Friday afternoon, the Governor’s office contacted MedSpeed for help.

Supporting patients in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic

MedSpeed analysts worked around the clock to create a routing structure connecting hundreds of facilities to three labs throughout the state. The implementation team brought in 15 MedSpeeders from other regions to launch the system. In less than three business days, it was operational.

One day after the launch, the state met its testing goal for the first time. Over the first 30 days, the MedSpeed team optimized the network and balanced the specimen flow into the lab. Additionally, the network ran less expensively than initially priced, saving much-needed resources for the state. Ultimately, MedSpeed’s rapid response helped the state to better serve the community during the pandemic.
